Episode 87: Sarah Axelson TITLE IX ANNIVERSARY

Sarah Axelson is Senior Director, Advocacy at the Women’s Sports Foundation (WSF). Having worked in women’s sports advocacy for more than a decade, Axelson is a Title IX expert, focusing her work on both grassroots and national initiatives that educate the public and advocate for gender equity in sports. Axelson was part of the team behind the research, Beyond X’s & O’s: Gender Bias and Coaches of Women’s College Sports, as a result of this research, Axelson helped to launch the WSF’s Sports Advocacy Network (SAN) in 2016 and continues to coordinate SAN convenings which bring together experts and thought leaders in order to create an action plan to address the most pressing issues in sports for women and girls. In 2020, Axelson helped to launch The Equity Project, an initiative of WSF which brings together individuals and organizations that aims to impact participation, policy, representation and leadership in sports in sustainable and measurable ways.

A lifelong athlete, she considers herself a byproduct of Title IX, and was fortunate to participate in four years of NCAA Division III varsity softball at her undergraduate institution. Axelson graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Mary Washington (Fredericksburg, VA). Most recently, Axelson received her Master of Public Administration degree through the Executive MPA program in the Marxe School of Public and International Affairs at Baruch College (New York, NY). She was named the 2018 Graduate-in-Residence by the University of Mary Washington’s Department of Psychological Science.
