Episode 137: Hayley Simmonds Gravel, Iliac Surgery & TCA Mentorship Program

December 15, 2022
Hayley Simmonds has been a full-time, professional cyclist since completing her PhD in Inorganic Chemistry at The University of Cambridge in 2016. To date she has won two Elite British Time Trial titles (2015 & 2016) and 17 Cycling Time Trials National titles. She also holds three British TT records (at 10, 25 and 50 miles) and was the first woman to break the 50-minute barrier for a 25-mile time trial.

Internationally, Hayley has represented Great Britain at 5 Road Cycling World Championships and 3 European Championships since 2015. She won a bronze medal for Team England in the time trial at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and another for Team GB in the time trial at the 2019 European Games. She also represented Great Britain at the second e-Sports World Championship in February 2022 and at the inaugural UCI Gravel World Championship just a couple months ago in fall 2022.

In 2017 she achieved eight top 10s in UCI ranked events, including a win on Stage three of Lotto Thuringen Ladies Tour in Germany which ultimately resulted in a 3rd place in the GC. That year she also finished 9th overall in Emakumeen Bira in the Basque Country, having finished 6th on the queen stage which ended at the summit of a 13km climb. Hayley considers herself a GC rider who specializes in time trials and long climbs. In October 2021 she was awarded the prize for Most Combatitive Rider at The Women’s Tour of Britain following a solo break on Stage 5 of the race.

Hayley has also appeared as co-commentator and studio pundit for several high-level cycling events, including World Championships, European Championships, Ride London, Commonwealth Games and La Course.

Hayley has been a member of The Cyclists’ Alliance since its inception and became involved in the mentoring program in 2018; first as a mentee then as a mentor.

Outside of cycling she loves to cook and bake, is a big cat lover and mother to a black cat called Liquorice.
